At Wilkinson's Removals, we have extensive experience in handling various types of moves. When it comes to importing your goods, there are three main categories to consider:

A. If you are relocating your primary residence from France to the UK, you may be eligible to import your goods without paying taxes. However, you will need to apply for a TOR1 unique reference number (also known as a TOR). This can be done online at the following link: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/application-for-transfer-of-residence-relief-tor1 The application process usually takes up to two weeks, although recent delays suggest it may take longer. Therefore, it is advisable to initiate the process as soon as possible. You will need to provide at least a basic list of the items you intend to import, which can be amended at a later stage.

B. If your move does not involve transferring your primary residence, such as when moving goods from a second home, you will be required to pay duty and VAT based on the value of your goods. The duty amounts to 4% of the goods' value, and VAT is calculated at 20% of the combined value of the goods and duty. Additionally, an administration fee of £60 applies. To get an idea of the costs, here are a few examples:
- For goods valued at £1000, the total amount to pay would be £280.
- For goods valued at £5000, the total amount to pay would be £1272.
- For goods valued at £10000, the total amount to pay would be £2512.

C. In the case where you have inherited goods and can prove it with a copy of a will and supporting documents from your solicitor or a similar authority, you can import the goods free of taxes. For this scenario, you will need to complete form C1421, which we can provide you with.

Regardless of the category, we will require a copy of your passport and proof of residence in France. You will also need to sign a few forms allowing us to handle the necessary procedures on your behalf. If applicable, please provide us with a copy of your TOR1 unique reference number.
