FAQs

What Is a House Clearance?

A house clearance involves the complete or partial removal of furniture, belongings, and household items from a property. It’s often needed after a bereavement, during probate, when downsizing, or preparing a home for sale or rental.

At Wilkinsons Removals and Storage, we handle every clearance with care and responsibility. We recycle, donate to charity, or reuse as many items as possible, helping reduce waste and support the community. Items that can’t be repurposed are taken to a licensed local recycling centre for proper disposal.

Unlike simple rubbish removal, house clearances are typically more comprehensive — ranging from clearing a few large items to emptying an entire home. Whether you need a full clear-out or a partial tidy, we offer a flexible, respectful service across Bristol, Gloucestershire, and surrounding areas.

Do customers pay for house clearances?

Yes, house clearance services are chargeable. After an initial chat and a visit to assess the property, we’ll provide a clear, no-obligation quote tailored to the job — whether it’s a partial tidy or a full clear-out.

Do you send items to landfill?

No — we aim to keep waste to a minimum. Most items are reused, recycled, or donated to charity. Only non-suitable items are taken to a licensed recycling centre for responsible disposal.

Are you a licensed waste carrier?

Yes, we’re a fully licensed waste carrier (licence number available on request). You can trust us to handle all waste responsibly and in line with UK regulations.

How long do I have to clear a property after a death?

If the property was rented, it should be cleared and keys returned by the end of the tenancy notice period.
If it was owned, the timeline depends on the probate process. Your solicitor will guide you on the expected timescales, which can vary based on the estate.

Can a house be cleared before probate?

It’s generally advised not to clear a house before probate is granted. The property may contain valuable items like jewellery, antiques, or cash, which are part of the estate and must be accounted for. Always consult the solicitor handling the estate before removing anything.

How long does probate usually take?

Probate typically takes 6 to 12 months to complete, depending on the complexity of the estate. Simple cases can finish in around 6 months, while larger or contested estates may take longer. Your solicitor will be able to provide a more accurate timeline based on your situation.
